Call Bets and Announced Bets

In the game of Roulette, Called Bets and Announced Bets are often considered to be the same but a difference does exist between these two types of roulette bets. Technically though, a Call Bet is one placed by the player without placing any money on the table to cover the cost of the bet.

Many jurisdictions consider this as illegal since this is the equivalent of betting on credit. An Announced Bet on the other hand is one where the player calls his bet and immediately places money on the table to cover the bet amount and this before the hand comes to an end.

Certain number series in roulette have special appellations. These bets are known as the French Bets and each corresponds to a section on the wheel. Players can bet a specific amount per series. Not all casinos offer these types of bets however while some may offer additional bets or variations thereof.

Voisins du Zéro (neighbors of zero)
Voisins du Zéro or Grand Voisins du Zéro is the name for the seventeen numbers placed between 22 and 25 inclusive. On a single zero wheel the numbers are 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25.

This type of bet calls for 9 chips or multiples thereof. The chips are placed as follows: Two on the 0, 2, 3 trio; One on the 4/7 split; One on the 12/15 split; One on the 18/21 split; One on the 19/22 split; Two on the 25/26/28/29 corner and one on the 32/35 split.

Jeu Zéro (Zero Game)
Jeu Zéro which translates into Zero Game is the appellation for those numbers which are closest to zero. These numbers which are 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15 are all included in the big series but with a different placement.

This bet is made up in four parts using 4 chips or multiples. One chip goes on 0/3 split, 1 on the 12 – 15 split, 1 on the 26 as a straight up bet and 1 on the 32 – 35 split. This bet is quite popular in Germany and many European Casinos and is offered as a 5 piece bet in various Eastern European Casinos. This 5 piece bet, known as the zero spiel naca includes another bet in addition to the four others which is a straight up bet on the number 19.

Le Tiers du Cylindre (Third of the Wheel)
The twelve numbers between 27 and 33 inclusive which lie on opposite side of the wheel are known as the Tiers du Cylindre. On a single zero wheel the numbers are 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33. The name is derived from the fact that this bet comprises of numbers as close to one third of the wheel as possible. Literally, the name translated from the French means “A Third of the Wheel”.

This bet is very popular in British Casinos and consists of 6 chips or multiples thereof. The 6 chips are each placed on a split as follows: 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36. The Tiers bet is also known as the Small Series or Series 5/8.

Another variation of the Tiers bet is the “Tiers 5, 8, 10, 11” which is a 10 piece bet where additional chips are placed as straight up bets on numbers 5, 8, 10 and 11.

Orphelins (Orphans)
These bets correspond to the two parts of the wheels excluding the Tiers and Voisins. They consist in eight numbers which are 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31 and 9.

A total of 5 chips is bet with a straight up on the 1 and 1 chip on the splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34.

The Neighbors
Neighbors bets are bets made up of a main number and its two immediate ones on both sides. For instance a bet on 0 and the Neighbors represents a 5 piece bet with a chip straight up on 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. A further example of Neighbors bet would be 1, 9, 14 and the Neighbors which is a 15 piece bet where 1 piece is placed on 18, 22, 33 and 16, 2 pieces on 9, 31, 20 and 1 and 3 pieces on 14.

Final Bets
Final Bets are another type of bet offered in single zero games. The name for this bet is quite self explanatory as for instance a bet on Final 4 would be a four piece bet with 1 piece placed on each number ending in 4 that is 4, 14, 24 and 34. A Final 7 Bet would be a 3 piece bet with 1 piece placed on 7, 17 and 27.

Final Bets from 0 to 6 each cost four pieces while Final Bets 7, 8 and 9 cost 3 pieces each.

Some casinos also offer split final bets where for instance a final 5/8 would mean a 4 piece bet with 1 piece placed on each of the 5/8, 15/18, 25/28 splits and the number 35.

Full Completes / Maximums
A Complete bet, relates all inside bets to a specific number. For high rollers, Full Complete Bets are commonly known as maximum bets.

In European Roulette, the maximum amount which players are allowed to wager is based on a progressive bet structure. For example, if a casino allows a maximum bet of £1,000 on a 35-1 straight up it means that £2,000 can be wagered on each 17-1 split linked to that straight up. Accordingly, £4,000 may be wagered on each of the four 8-1 corners while £3,000 can be wagered on each 11-1 street. Similarly, £6,000 can be wagered on each 5-1 sixline.

As an example, a player wishing to place a full complete bet on the number 17 would call “17 to the maximum”. This bet would be equivalent to $40,000 essentially £1,000 on the 17 straight up, £2,000 on each of the four splits, £3,000 on the street, £4,000 each on the four corner bets and £6,000 on the two six line.

For these types of bets, the player will call out to the croupier while placing enough chips to cover the bet within reach of the latter. The croupier will announce the bet, verify that the correct amount has been placed on the table to cover the bet and place a market on the table corresponding to the player. Should this bet be a winner, the player will essentially receive a payout of £392,000 for the £40,000 bet.

These maximum or full complete bets are typically played at Mayfair Casinos in London and other top class European Casinos. Both the players and the croupiers attending these tables (being the most experienced staff) are fully aware of all intricacies of the game and its payouts and nothing is ever placed on the table even in case of win.

Furthermore, experienced roulette croupiers will know that at these levels no player will play the same bet twice. Consequently, in case of a win, the croupier will pay the player’s winnings as well as stake and announce that the payout “is with your bet down Sir”.
